Christian Pilgrimage tours
As an ancient Christian kingdom, the land that we know today as Ethiopia is full of temples, churches and monasteries.
The jewel in the crown of this religious heritage is Lalibela, Ethiopia’s holiest Christian site, with eleven rock-hewn churches dating back to the 12th century. There are also the 14th and 16th century Christian sites, such as the Lake Tana monasteries and Gonder’s Debre-Brihan Silasie. In Yeha you can visit an ancient temple built in the 4th century BC; and in the mountains of Tigray you can climb sheer cliffs to visit monasteries established more than a thousand years ago, and where priests still live today.
When you go to these sites, you never fail to see ordinary people practising their faith in the everyday ritual of worship and prayer. It feels as though time has stood still: church services today are conducted as they were in centuries gone by. You will also see icons and church paintings that have sustained religious belief over hundreds of years.
On your pilgrimage to Ethiopia it would be impossible to view every ancient church and religious site. So we have designed a number of different itineraries which allow you to explore some of these treasures at the right pace and to experience what it means to live in a truly religious country.
Tours are led by guides who have deep knowledge of the history of Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity.
